    Bogoliubov excitation spectrum of an elongated condensate from quasi-one-dimensional to three-dimensional transition

    The quasiparticle excitation spectra of a Bose gas trapped in a highly anisotropic trap is studied with respect to varying total number of particles by numerically solving the effective one-dimensional (1D) Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation proposed recently by Mateo \textit{et al.}. We obtain the static properties and Bogoliubov spectra of the system in the high energy domain. This method is computationally efficient and highly accurate for a condensate system undergoing a 1D to three-dimensional (3D) cigar-shaped transition, as is shown through a comparison our results with both those calculated by the 3D-GP equation and analytical results obtained in limiting cases. We identify the applicable parameter space for the effective 1D-GP equation and find that this equation fails to describe a system with large number of atoms. We also identify that the description of the transition from 1D Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to 3D cigar-shaped BEC using this equation is not smooth, which highlights the fact that for a finite value of a⊥/asa_\perp/a_s the junction between the 1D and 3D crossover is not perfect.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure

    Operational Decision Making under Uncertainty: Inferential, Sequential, and Adversarial Approaches

    Modern security threats are characterized by a stochastic, dynamic, partially observable, and ambiguous operational environment. This dissertation addresses such complex security threats using operations research techniques for decision making under uncertainty in operations planning, analysis, and assessment. First, this research develops a new method for robust queue inference with partially observable, stochastic arrival and departure times, motivated by cybersecurity and terrorism applications. In the dynamic setting, this work develops a new variant of Markov decision processes and an algorithm for robust information collection in dynamic, partially observable and ambiguous environments, with an application to a cybersecurity detection problem. In the adversarial setting, this work presents a new application of counterfactual regret minimization and robust optimization to a multi-domain cyber and air defense problem in a partially observable environment

    Energetic and environmental benefits of co-digestion of food waste and cattle slurry: a preliminary assessment

    The research evaluated the feasibility of centralised pre-processing and pasteurisation of source-separated domestic food waste followed by transport to farms for anaerobic co-digestion with dairy cattle slurry. Data from long-term experiments on the co-digestion of these two substrates was used to predict gross energy yields; net yields were then derived from full system analysis using an energy modelling tool. The ratio of cattle slurry to food waste in the co-digestion was based on the nutrient requirements of the dairy farm and was modelled using both nitrogen and phosphorous as the limiting factor. The model was run for both medium-size and large farms in which the cattle were housed either all year round or for only 50% of the year. The results showed that the addition of food waste improved energy yields per digester unit volume, with a corresponding increased potential for improving farm income by as much as 50%. Data for dairy farms in the county of Hampshire UK, which has a low density of dairy cattle and a large population, was used as a stringent test case to verify the applicability of the concept. In this particular case the nutrient requirements of the larger farms could be satisfied, and further benefits were gained from the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions avoided through improved manure management and fertiliser imports. The results indicated that this approach offered major advantages in terms of resource conservation and pollution abatement when compared to either centralised anaerobic digestion of food waste or energy recovery from thermal treatmen

    Inferring Tax Compliance from Pass-through: Evidence from Airbnb Tax Enforcement Agreements

    Tax enforcement is especially costly when market participants are difficult to observe. The benefits of enforcement depend crucially on pre-enforcement compliance. We derive an upper bound on pre-enforcement compliance from the pass-through of newly enforced taxes. Using data on Airbnb listings and the platform’s voluntary collection agreements, we find that taxes are paid on, at most, 24% of Airbnb transactions prior to enforcement. We also find that demand for Airbnb listings is inelastic, driving three key insights: the tax burden falls disproportionately on renters, the excess burden is small, and tax enforcement is relatively ineffective at reducing local Airbnb activity

    Recycling carbon fibre with an acetone/water solvent and zinc chloride catalyst: resin degradation and fibre characterisation

    The degradation of a carbon fibre reinforced epoxy resin with an acetone/water mixture and ZnCl2 catalyst was investigated. The solvent/catalyst system achieved a resin removal yield in excess of 94% after 1.5 h at 290°C and 45 min at 300°C. Single fibre tensile testing indicated an increase in fibre strength after the recycling process. The strongest fibres were recovered using a reaction temperature of 290°C and exhibited a strength of 3.21 ± 1.10 GPa. The technique developed therefore appears to recover high quality fibres while reducing the temperature by 30°C and process time by 25% when compared to earlier work

    Palmitoylation of Desmoglein 2 Is a Regulator of Assembly Dynamics and Protein Turnover.

    Desmosomes are prominent adhesive junctions present between many epithelial cells as well as cardiomyocytes. The mechanisms controlling desmosome assembly and remodeling in epithelial and cardiac tissue are poorly understood. We recently identified protein palmitoylation as a mechanism regulating desmosome dynamics. In this study, we have focused on the palmitoylation of the desmosomal cadherin desmoglein-2 (Dsg2) and characterized the role that palmitoylation of Dsg2 plays in its localization and stability in cultured cells. We identified two cysteine residues in the juxtamembrane (intracellular anchor) domain of Dsg2 that, when mutated, eliminate its palmitoylation. These cysteine residues are conserved in all four desmoglein family members. Although mutant Dsg2 localizes to endogenous desmosomes, there is a significant delay in its incorporation into junctions, and the mutant is also present in a cytoplasmic pool. Triton X-100 solubility assays demonstrate that mutant Dsg2 is more soluble than wild-type protein. Interestingly, trafficking of the mutant Dsg2 to the cell surface was delayed, and a pool of the non-palmitoylated Dsg2 co-localized with lysosomal markers. Taken together, these data suggest that palmitoylation of Dsg2 regulates protein transport to the plasma membrane.     Saturated gain spectrum of VECSELs determined by transient measurement of lasing onset

    We describe time-resolved measurements of the evolution of the spectrum of radiation emitted by an optically-pumped continuous-wave InGaAs-GaAs quantum well laser, recorded as lasing builds up from noise to steady state. We extract a fitting parameter corresponding to the gain dispersion of the parabolic spectrum equal to ?79 ± 30 fs2 and ?36 ± 6 fs2 for a resonant and anti-resonant structure, respectively. Furthermore the recorded evolution of the spectrum allows for the calculation of an effective FWHM gain bandwidth for each structure, of 11 nm and 18 nm, respectively
